AUSTRALIA DOMINATES (YET AGAIN) AT F1 WORLD FINALS!
2ND, 5TH, BEST ENGINEERING, THE ASHES, AND MORE!
Continuing
the tradition of dominating the international F1 in Schools Technology
Challenge competition, Team Australia has again taken "most of the silverware"
at the F1 in Schools World Finals Singapore 2010 supported by LG.
Following
on from 2nd and 3rd in 2008 and 2nd, 3rd and 4th in 2009...Australian students
have finished 2nd and 5th in what has been described as the most close-fought
event in the competition's history.
"Zer0.9", a team of three Brisbane students combined with three from Dubai, stood alongside
new world champions the USA and also took away the Best Collaboration Award
which was provided by Lotus F1. The trophy is an actual part from a Lotus F1
car.
"Basilisk
Performance", comprising four teenagers from Ballarat,
won the coveted Best Engineered Award (provided by McLaren Mercedes F1) and
Best Portfolio Award (from F1 Racing magazine). Earlier in the day they had won
The Ashes in a shootout against England.
Zer0.9 was
also a finalist in the Innovative Thinking Award and Basilisk Performance was a
finalist for Best Pit Display Award.
Basilisk
Performance had a private audience with reigning Formula One world champion
Jenson Button after the awards ceremony and he autographed their car.
In winning
the Best Engineering Award in the world's largest STEM-based competition
(science, technology, engineering and maths),
Australia has cemented itself as the powerhouse of design and innovation in
this global competition.
Team
Australia first won this coveted award at the 2005 World Finals in England and
since then has held a tight grip on it winning again in 2006, 2007, 2008 and
now 2010.
The award -
presented by Vodafone McLaren Mercedes - was for the high school team with the
highest standard of engineering innovation and design from the 18 nations
represented. It went to "Basilisk Performance" from Ballarat's
Sebastopol College - Aidan Cowie, Ben Kersten, Brett Sizeland and Keira Schroeder.
The
foursome took a gap year, having completed their schooling, to focus on the
finals in Singapore.
There are
9,000,000 students in 33 countries engaged in the F1 in Schools competition.
Only the top 130 made it to Singapore for the World Final. Of these...the four
Australians were voted the best.
The
students were tasked with designing a miniature F1 car using industry-standard
3D engineering design software, conducting aerodynamics studies using Virtual
Wind Tunnel software, creating "G-code" to program a Denford
manufacturing centre to cut the shape out of block of
balsa, using rapid prototyping technology and exotic materials to make wheels
and wings, doing further aerodynamics testing in mini smoke and wind tunnels,
then racing the car on a 20-metre twin lane race track. Powered by a standard CO2 canister it reaches
speeds of 80 km/h and completes a lap in little more than a second.

Congratulations! # Permanant link to post TEAM AUSTRALIA CAUSES MAJOR UPSET AT F1 WORLD FINALSTeam Australia has "punched above its weight" and scored unexpected wins in the knockout competition at the F1 in Schools Singapore 2010 supported by LG. Both student F1 teams which make up the Australian contingent - "Basilisk Performance" and "Zer0.9" - have outraced much more fancied teams on the final day of competing. "Basilisk Performance" (Sebastopol College, Ballarat) entered the second round of elimination races today on the 20-metre track against the fastest of the 25 nations: Germany. A track time of 1.295 seconds saw the Aussies cross the line ahead of the stunned Germans (1.353 seconds). In the next race "Zer0.9" (Pine Rivers State High School, Brisbane and The Indian School, Dubai) took on the host nation - Singapore - also came from behind to cause an upset win. Their chromed race car broke the laser beam with 1.270 seconds compared to 1.291. Round three saw an all-Australian shootout and it was "Zer0.9" who emerged victorious stopping the clock at 1.264 seconds to 1.279 of "Basilisk Performance". The losing side still had plenty to cheer about with "trigger man" Brett Sizeland claiming a personal-best reaction time (on the hand trigger that fires off the miniature F1 car) of just 0.137 seconds! This would end up being the second best time of the whole competition. The superior design of the "Zer0.9" car counted in the next round when they disposed of the Germany-USA collaboration team. Despite recording identical reaction times, car speed made the difference and the Aussies completed the track in 1.252 seconds to 1.276. The final showdown was Australia versus Malaysia. The latter nation emerged victorious with a sizzling 1.251 seconds to "Zer0.9"'s 1.332. It was a personal-best for the Queenslanders. All teams now await the naming of the next F1 in Schools world champions at tonight's awards ceremony. Event: F1 in Schools World Finals Singapore 2010 supported by LG.

# Permanant link to post TEAM AUSTRALIA WINS THE ASHES AT F1 WORLD FINALSTeam Australia has retained The Ashes at the F1 in Schools Singapore 2010 supported by LG!
The tiny urn - an exact replica of that fought over by the cricket teams of Australia and England - contains the ashes of the fastest Australian and English cars from the 2007 world finals. It goes to the fastest team at each world final of this international technology competition.
Redline Racing won the coveted urn for Australia in '09 and today Basilisk Performance, a group of three boys and a girl from Sebastopol College in Ballarat, came from behind to beat the favourites, Dynamic, with a time of 1.288.
The unexpected win was due to the team's "trigger man", Brett Sizeland, with his ultra-quick 2nd-best reaction time of the whole knockout tournament at the world finals, and to the innovative design of the miniature powered F1 racer.
The win came minutes after Brett had outperformed hot favourites Germany in the knockout competition. Despite what seemed like a lopsided match-up with 21st-placed Basilisk Performance versus number one placed Germany, the Aussie car crossed the line first in 1.295 seconds.
The second of the teams that make up Team Australia, the international Brisbane-Dubai collaboration team of "Zer0.9", made it all the way through to the finals of the knockout tournament and was just beaten by Malaysia for top honours. Their lap time of 1.332...a personal best...was bettered by that of 1.251.
The new world champions of F1 in Schools will be announced tonight at a glittery awards ceremony to be attended by F1 senior management and drivers.

# Permanant link to post Zer0.9 wins second place in KnockoutsMajor upset by Team Australia at the knockout racing! Basilisk Performance defeated number one ranked Germany with a time of 1.295! The Germans were stunned. They were the hot favourites. Zer0.9 then beat the local Singapore team with a 1.270. Unfortunately in the next round BP had to race against their Aussie colleagues in Zer0.9...and whilst BP claimed the second best reaction time of the day (0.137) it was Zer0.9 who went on to the next round.
Zer0.9 has made it through to the final round of knockout racing today having beaten Singapore and the Germany-USA collaboration team. In the final round their "personal best" of 1.332 was not enough to beat Malaysia's 1.251. Still, it was 9 valuable points towards their total. And they were the highest placed of the 6 collaboration teams. # Permanant link to post TEAM AUSTRALIA MEET MARK WEBBER AT F1 WORLD FINALSMembers of Australia's youngest F1 team met with their hero, Mark Webber, last night during the F1 in Schools World Finals Singapore 2010 supported by LG.
The chance meeting took place when "Zer0.9" - an international collaboration of high schoolers from Queensland and Dubai - were dining at a restaurant after the two days of intense competition. Mark and his Red Bull Racing colleagues were also dining there.
One of the Brisbane students is the grandson of multiple national drag racing champion Victor Bray, and Mark is a friend of Victor's. The timing was perfect for Brisbane teacher Corey Geiskens who was celebrating his birthday.
The outright and category winners of the F1 in Schools World Finals Singapore 2010 will be announced tonight at a glittering awards ceremony to be attended by F1 drivers and F1 team management. The master of ceremonies is "the voice of Formula One", James Allen.
Between now and then is an elimination race event which will see "Zer0.9" take on the host team, Singapore. The other Australian team, "Basilisk Performance" from Victoria, are up against hot favourites Germany.
The teenage race car designers-builders-racers are racing their miniature powered F1 cars along a 20-metre track at speeds of 80 km/h. They designed, analysed, tested and manufactured the cars using space-age 3D software, industry-specification manufacturing equipment and miniature smoke and wind tunnels.
First prize is $1.5M worth of scholarships to study engineering at City University in London, the large glass crystal Bernie Ecclestone Trophy and a private audience with reigning Formula One champion Jenson Button. Outright and category winning teams will receive VIP tours of pit garages at the Singapore Grand Prix. Category winners will be presented with trophies provided by the Formula One teams. Australia last won the event in 2006.

# Permanant link to post Secret weapons and LG's Best Photo competition"Basilisk Performance" went shopping at Little India last night...bought a "secret weapon" for the reaction timing knockouts today. Not allowed to say any more.
LG running competition for best photo of the week. I reckon both Aussie teams in with a good chance if "Zer0.9" enter Corey Geiskens meeting Mark Webber last night...and "Basilisk Performance" enter them sitting in the back of a local guy’s truck drinking their favourite beverage, Kickapoo Joy Juice. They had all seen how over here you are allowed to have people in the back of open trucks without seat belts, so decided to make that the feature of their photo. # Permanant link to post Awards ceremony tonight"Zer0.9" setting up their pit display in ballroom of Conrad Centennial Hotel for tonight's awards ceremony. Will be seen by bosses of F1 teams and F1 drivers! What a coup for 13 year old graphic designer Alysha Limmer.
No way of knowing who will win tonight. Ireland and Germany with fastest cars over the two days...Germany has an amazing pit display...been told it cost "a lot of zero's"...heard that "Zer0.9" verbal presentation was very well received by judges and "Basilisk Performance" folio also given a lot of praise. Just have to wait. # Permanant link to post Special birthday message from Mark Webber"Zer0.9" were eating at Outback Steakhouse next door to our hotel last night when they saw a familiar face: F1 driver Mark Webber. He came over and wished Corey Geiskens, the Brisbane teacher of "Zer0.9", a happy birthday!!! (pity Corey was wearing the Vodafone McLaren F1 shirt at the time!) # Permanant link to post TEAM AUSTRALIA SUCCESSFUL ON DAY TWO OF F1 WORLD FINALSTeenage race car designers-builders-racers from "Down Under" are setting the pace at the F1 in Schools World Finals Singapore 2010 supported by LG.
The knockout category of this international competition has two nations at a time racing their miniature powered F1 cars along a 20-metre track at speeds of 80 km/h. The cars were designed by the students using space-age 3D software, industry-specification manufacturing equipment and miniature smoke and wind tunnels.
Team Australia is made up of Victorian team "Basilisk Performance" and "Zer0.9" - an international collaboration of high schoolers from Queensland and the United Arab Emirates. "Basilisk Performance" beat Ireland with a time of 1.326 seconds. "Zer0.9" faced China and won that shootout with a lap of 1.283 seconds.
Stage two of the knockouts will be held tomorrow at the Conrad Centennial Hotel and "Basilisk Performance" are up against the fastest team at the world finals, Germany. "Zer0.9" will take on eighth fastest Singapore.
Reaction time - of the hand trigger device which shoots the cars down the track - is measured electronically as well as overall lap time and when "Basilisk Performance" student Brett Sizeland stopped the clock at 0.147 seconds it was the second fastest response for the day!
The knockout competition is one of several categories that contribute towards the overall score. Other categories include engineering innovation, a 20-page technical portfolio, verbal presentation and marketing. Team Australia has already been assessed in these and, like the other 24 teams, awaits the announcement of winners at tomorrow's awards ceremony.
Seven teams didn't have to race in the knockout session because they had set the quickest times of the world finals. They are Germany, Malaysia, Ireland, Singapore-Portugal, United States, United States-Germany and Canada-Germany.
The contemporary graphic pit display stand of "Zer0.9" has been chosen by judges as one of six to be relocated to the Conrad Centennial Hotel for the awards ceremony on Wednesday. This glittering evening function will be attended by Formula One drivers and senior management and is where the next F1 in Schools world champions will be named.

A total of 26 teams from 19 nations have assembled at "race headquarters", the Conrad Centennial Hotel, and the competition starts in earnest on Monday.
A panel of international judges will assess the teams over 17 categories such as innovation, understanding of engineering principles, marketing, collaboration with industry, public speaking, outright car speed on the 20-metre race track, technical folio and pit booth display.
The Ballarat team is "Basilisk Performance" (named after the basilisk lizard which runs rapidly over water) whose members graduated from Sebastopol College at the end of last year. The commitment of the three boys and one girl can be seen in that they have taken a gap year to invest in preparing for this event...working every day at their old school.
"Zer0.9" (named after the goal of breaking the one second barrier) is an international collaboration team and features three 13 and 14 year olds from Brisbane who have worked with three boys from the United Arab Emirates. A demonstration of their commitment is the 15 hour flight the UAE students took to Australia to meet their team mates and get the process started. The car design, analysis and presentations have been completed using email, Skype, Facebook and Cisco Webex technology.
